How do spammers get email address?

Spam is created by many means. Some companies that you may have had dealings with will sell their mailing lists to third parties, spammers included. Spammers also use spiders to search the Internet and harvest any email addresses that they find. If you post to newsgroups, you are also at risk.. Forwarding email to large numbers of people usually ends up on a list somewhere.

Is Spam illegal?

Clearly Spam is illegal if it promotes an illegal product or service. However, spam legislation is pending in the US and that would make the mere act of sending unsolicited commercial email illegal in the absence of an existing business relationship.

How can Spam email be stopped?

There are a number of things you can do to stop Spam email. Which ones suits you best will depend upon your needs.  Bottom line is, the tighter one tries to filter spam, the more legitimate mail gets filtered as well. Most email that is considered spam can easily be stopped by spam filters and contacting the company from which it originated and ask them to take you off their mailing list.  Shoals Link does have spam filters in place, but people who create spam also know how to get around spam filters.  If you get spam email continuously from a particular individual and are unsuccessful in getting them to stop, you can use the personal filter under options in your webmail account, or contact us and we will consider adding a new filter rule to our mail server.
